Waiting for the Dawn
By Jeff Rolfzen & Rocky Steen-Rolfzen
Dead man walking by the corner store
A peaceful protest on the killing floor
A gambler gets just what he’s playing for
And I’m just doing fine
The poets write their sonnets in the rain
A lucky coin falls on the tracks on a train
I find no reason to complain no
I’m just doing fine
Tonight I’m hollow but in the morning I will have all my virtues
Ask not a favor now my love for I can only hurt you
All the books that I have read can’t help you at all
No prose that I know can charm the avenues and caverns of your soul
Even wise men lose their power with the passing of the hour
Time and luck both know me well
They have run my whole life long
With everyday they slip away
Someday I fear that they’ll be gone
Like a mother doe caring for her fawn oh
I’m just waiting for the dawn
There’s a fire at the wishing well
An innocent inside a jail cell
I’m not quite disturbed though only time will tell
I’m just doing fine
Storms roll in from out of state
The heron flies through the sideways rain
He cries in pain a sound that I just cannot relate
No cuz I’m just doing fine
Tonight I’m hollow but in the morning I will have all my virtues
Ask not a favor now my love for I can only hurt you
Hiding weakness behind words spoken eloquently
With silence you surrender a glance that speaks and says this is not me
Then you wilt just like the flower
Under the passing of the hour
Time and luck both know me well
They have run my whole life long
With everyday they slip away
Someday I fear that they’ll be gone
Like a lovesick robin singing his song
I’m just waiting for the dawn
The thief he falls upon his getaway
The sapling grows in the fireplace
Sunlight streaks across your sullen face
And I’m just doing fine
Snow drifts down along the mountainside
People take shelter while the birds take flight
To everyone now it should be no sudden surprise
I’m just doing fine
Tonight I’m hollow but in the morning I will have all my virtues
Ask not a favor now my love for I can only hurt you
Paint a picture with your words and frame it with your smile
Leave the picture on the wall and just lie here for a while
We’ll stare in silence at the bower
You and me, and the passing of the hour
Time and luck both know me well
They have run my whole life long
With everyday they slip away
Someday I fear that they’ll be gone
But like that lonesome drifter who’s just travelling along
I’m just waiting for the dawn
